My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship
I was ecstatic and thankful for the opportunity the Hinrich Foundation would offer me. I knew that acquiring an MBA degree would help take me to another level as a person as well as my development in becoming a business leader.
Why I’m interested in trade
Trade is blind to most people, yet it’s around us every day. Unfortunately many take it for granted – trust me, I was one of them. However, it has changed every since I moved to China. Having the opportunity of being in the mecca of trade, I am fascinated with how raw materials get turned into finished products and get in the hands of people in all parts of the world.
What this scholarship opportunity means to me
The scholarship is another stepping stone for me to accomplish my objectives in life – sufficient to support my current and future family, while also being the very best I can be in whatever I do.
The international experiences I’m most looking forward to
Meeting people from all walks of life. I realized that being growing up in the US, I was very much in a silo where the outside world was unknown to me.
What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home
I’ll be bringing a picture of my family as a reminder of who has helped me get to where I am today.
My favorite hobbies and other interests
I love American football because it’s a prefect blend of mental toughness, preparation, teamwork, competition and sportsmanship.
My proudest achievement so far in life
The day I was able to deposit money into my parent’s bank account to help them purchase a restaurant to better their livelihood.
The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life
A family bankruptcy when I was in college was the roughest patch in my life. We lost everything including our home, cars, restaurant and college fund. I had to take out a large college loan and work three jobs in college.
My future goals and aspirations
My one future goal is an umbrella of all the things I want to accomplish in life. I want to be an impactful leader in a company or whatever I do, so that my family can lean on me whenever needed.
How I plan to give back and help others
One thing I wish I can do is help the needy, particularly the elderly who have nothing and abandoned by their families. Creating a social enterprise that can give the elderly a skill to work and earn a living would be very fulfilling for me.
As I write and reflect on what I want to do and be, it all sounds like a dream, but then I look back at my progression and I am proud to say I am on track. It’s a battle, but behind the finish line is my family waiting for me. This will be enough drive to get me where I want to be and help everyone else around my on the way.
