My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship

I was thrilled to hear the good news. This is the best opportunity I have ever received in my life, and I want to do my best to reward the Hinrich Foundation and my sponsor company, Knoll Printing & Packaging, for their trust in me. I also don’t want to let people down. They have offered me this opportunity and accompanied me on this journey as a scholar.

Why I’m interested in trade

My father, a businessman, influenced me in my interest in trade. I hope to set foot in the world of business to make a difference and resolve greater economic challenges in my country. It also helps that I am proficient in multiple languages, such as Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), English and French.

What this scholarship opportunity means to me

This scholarship is not just a study grant but an amazing opportunity to develop my career. Apart from receiving a fully-funded scholarship, I hope to reach new heights through career-building activities.

The international experiences I’m most looking forward to

I dream of going to France because of my work requirements. Knoll Printing & Packaging has an office in Paris.

What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home and why

I will bring with me all the gift cards from my best friends, colleagues and students. Whenever I feel lonely or lack of confidence, their kind words remind me of how loved I am and how sweet life can be with friends.

My favorite hobbies and other interests

My favorite hobby is going to the gym. I also enjoy hiking, reading and taking photographs.

My proudest achievement so far in life

I am proud of having started from scratch. For example, I became proficient in French in two-and-a-half years, and have gained a variety of professional experiences because of my language ability. I am not the smartest, but I believe my persistence leads me to achieve great things.

The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life

One time, I lost financial support on the last year of my bachelor’s study, and couldn’t even get a living allowance. I had to start working while I was studying in the university. I got a job at the Shekou International School where I have been working in the past four years. I also managed to complete my bachelor’s degree on time.

My future goals and aspirations

My first goal is to get excellent grades in my business management course at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), where I will pursue my Hinrich Foundation scholarship.

Next, I want to perform well during my internship at Knoll Printing & Packaging through hard work and the guidance of experienced mentors. I am confident that I will gain great knowledge and develop my skills as I start my business career.

How I plan to give back and help others

I want to help educate others by giving motivational speeches and tutorial classes. I believe I can be a mentor to new students and a good advisor to friends.

Personal statement

Being a scholar means having a lot of responsibilities amid expectations from my family, my sponsor Knoll, the Hinrich Foundation and HKBU. My determination to succeed only becomes much stronger because I have their trust and support. I want to prove that they have made the right choice as well. I am also proud of myself for being one of the esteemed Hinrich Foundation scholars.

Story about Li Yamei (Juliette)

During my summer vacation in 2015, I applied for a working holiday in Kenting, Taiwan. It was my first time to go abroad and live in a new place by myself for two weeks. I worked in a local diving store for 12 days during which I got my PADI Open Water Diver certificate. It was quite challenging for me because I was not even good at swimming before I left Shenzhen. However, I became an official diver, made a lot of friends who were also fond of diving, and heard so many interesting stories about undersea adventures. I also had plenty of chances to go diving after I got my license.

Stepping out of my comfort zone was difficult for me at the beginning, but once I realized how many beautiful memories and how many new life experiences it could bring me, everything became worth it!

I am also glad that I applied for the Hinrich Foundation scholarship and worked hard for this precious opportunity. Like my adventure in Taiwan, I am thrilled about the scholarship. There is again a whole new world for me to discover and enjoy.
