My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship

I was pleasantly surprised. Being awarded a Hinrich Foundation scholarship means a lot to me. It is an affirmation of my ability and hard work. I am grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to starting a new journey at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Why I’m interested in trade

Trade is something that can bring people together. We get to know our trading partners’ characteristics and culture, and this helps broaden our own horizon. When countries become successful trading partners, there is more harmony in this world. People profit from global trade.

What this scholarship opportunity means to me

The scholarship will provide me with an in-depth analysis of business. It will help me obtain the necessary knowledge and skills to become an international business leader. Also, it serves as a platform for me to develop myself and realize my dreams.

The international experiences I’m most looking forward to

I am looking forward to the internship at Global Sources and, if given the opportunity, the experience of working in another country.

What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home and why

I will bring a family photo to make me feel that my family is just close by. They encourage me to be strong in any situation. The photo will also be a reminder for me to give them a call regularly, or else my mother will be worried.

I will also bring a computer and cellphone with which to make video calls because I believe that chatting with them face to face is more meaningful than just looking at a photo.

My favorite hobbies and other interests

My favorite hobby is traveling. I love to go to different places and meet different people. I like to chat with strangers and get to know their life and culture. I also love gourmet food; I am eager to try a different cuisine, which I consider to be an important part of local culture.

My proudest achievement so far in life

On my first year at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, I took a part-time job at Yunshan Café and eventually became the manager of the Human Resources Department. My salary covered a portion of my living expenses. This, I believe, is the first step to being independent.

The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life

At the beginning of my studies, I learned that the money I would be getting from my parents would not be enough to cover all my living expenses. To solve this problem, I began to make a financial plan and keep track of my money. My part-time job also helped me save money each month.

My future goals and aspirations

I aim to become a successful businesswoman. I would like to advance in the field of marketing in a more senior role. This will give me the opportunity to gain new skills and techniques. I hope I can contribute to making globalization more universally beneficial, balanced and fair; help optimize the structure of international trade and, in turn, make a positive impact.

How I plan to give back and help others

I have done volunteer work in the past. Since I studied Business English, I would often go to the Nonglin community to teach English to elders. I think this is one way to give back to society through education.

I plan to keep doing volunteer work in the future. Even though at this point I myself am not rich, I will also donate to charity or even establish my own foundation if I achieve huge success.

Personal statement

I am greatly honored to receive the prestigious Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Scholarship. I am grateful for both the support and opportunity the foundation provides to aspiring leaders like me.

Becoming a businesswoman is my goal. This scholarship will help me to reach that dream. I think it will be a new journey for me; I will meet new people. I am looking forward to it.

Story about Yaxuan Sheng (Sharon)

At the start of my first year at the GDUFS, I had a lot of ambition. I wanted to make lots of friends and grow as an individual, so I took part in three school organizations: Student’s Union, Yunshan Café and Sunday Voluntary English Teaching. All three allowed me to improve my skills.

However, being involved in all of them meant having to put in a lot of work, which was something I had not considered. Every day, I would struggle with different deadlines. Even though I stayed on top of all my responsibilities, I did not have much free time.

One day I got frustrated and called my mother, telling her I was tired. To my surprise, she did not encourage me but rather suggested I quit. I refused and told her that I was determined to face any challenge. She then told me that I should accept all the work and deadlines as part of the challenge. I knew she was right.

When we dream big, we need to take all the difficulties into consideration because no success comes without effort.
