My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship

I was overwhelmed when I got an email intimation informing me that I was awarded this coveted scholarship. It was an unexpected one and I was overjoyed. In fact, I read and re read the email again and again to convince my self that I was indeed awarded the scholarship.

Why I’m interested in trade

I am interested in global sustainable trade because it is not just an intergenerational responsibility but an absolute necessity. Unbridled competition is resulting in unsustainable trade practices. By working with Hinrich Foundation that promotes sustainable trade practices, I feel I will be able to do my bit in bringing in resource efficiency and overall social and environmental stability.

What this scholarship opportunity means to me

It means the world to me. Its like a dream come true as I always wanted to pursue a master’s course abroad. Had it not been for this scholarship, I am not sure if I could have fulfilled this dream on my own.

The international experiences I’m most looking forward to

This is the first time I would be away from home for such a long duration and am elated. I am looking forward to experience life in Hong Kong and beyond. Am an avid observer and will cherish every experience I have during my stay here.

What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home

Besides lots and lots of memories of my home, family and work, which are inseparable, I carried a photo of my dad. Its been an tough emotional decision to leave him and come to Hong Kong to study.

My favorite hobbies and other interests

I am an avid reader. Besides, I like seeing new places, trying out new cuisines and helping others when in need.

My proudest achievement so far in life

Undoubtedly my seven-year stint at India’s largest English daily The Times of India as a reporter. I feel the experience has made me strong and independent.

The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life

Sexual harassment is one that I can think of. It is rampant in India and women like me who step outside to study and work often fall prey to it. It can and by all means end up demotivating you from doing what you want to do. I have gone through it, have seen it happening to others, raised my voice, got into verbal duels but did not relent.

My future goals and aspirations

Having been able to do an MA in International Journalism from one of Asia’s best universities (Hong Kong Baptist University), I want to expand my horizon and become an international journalist.

How I plan to give back and help others

I like helping others and would definitely do whatever possible. The opportunity provided by the Hinrich Foundation to contribute in selling products handmade by disabled Combodian artisans is one of the many that am eagerly looking forward to.

Personal statement

I thank Hinrich Foundation for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to complete my master programme as well as explore Hong Kong.

Story about Bushra Baseerat

My name is Bushra Baseerat. I am a journalist from India, currently on a sabbatical, pursuing a master’s course in International Journalism at the Hong Kong Baptist University.

I started my journalistic career with English daily The Times of India as a trainee journalist and continued with the biggest media house in India for nearly seven years rising to the rank of a special correspondent. I reported extensively on health and gender issues, climate change and wildlife among others.

During my stint with the English daily, I was awarded a fellowship by the Washington DC-based National Press Foundation for its Journalist2Journalist Program on “Lung Health Issues” held at Kuala Lumpur in November 2012.

If not busy with work, I can be found reading. My reading preferences vary, depending on my mood and I like fiction more than non-fiction.
