My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship
My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship:For two weeks after the interview, I checked my mailbox everyday but with no reply. Like a roller coaster ride, I experienced the feelings of excitement, nervousness, disappointment, but the result never came out. Finally, in a Monday afternoon, I was studying alone in my room, I received an email informing me that I was awarded this scholarship! I jumped out of the chair and couldn’t help laughing out loud. It was so hard for me to believe that I really made it, this life-changing thing really happened to me! I called my mother, my father, my brother, my aunt, basically everyone I know because I was so happy and proud of myself that I wanted to share the news with everyone.
Why I’m interested in trade
I started growing interest in trade when I took a course called “International Trade Practice”. In this course, I learned a lot of trade terms and cases concerning international trade. I realized that trade was not just as simple as a transaction, you really needed to take into consideration of a lot of factors in order to earn profits. What’s more, for the first time, it made me see how trade actually made the world become “smaller” and benefited our life.
What this scholarship opportunity means to me
First, this scholarship opportunity enables me to see more and experience more. Hong Kong is such a modern city where the life, people and education there are very different from Mainland China. Therefore, studying in Hong Kong would surely be a great opportunity for me to develop myself. Second, winning this scholarship is really a life-changing opportunity, it actually decides my future because it offers me two years of studying in a different city and two years of working in a great company, this journey will help shape me into a stronger and more capable person.
The international experiences I’m most looking forward to
I am looking forward to the half-year internship and some Hinrich Foundation activities including bazaar and China Sourcing Fair.
What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home
I bring the thermos bottle to my dorm to remind me of home. My parents bought this bottle for me when I was in my senior 3 at high school. At that time, my father would wake up really early every morning just to make soybean milk and brought it from home to me. The soybean milk was always put into this thermos bottle, so whenever I see it, I will think of home, think of how much my parents sacrifice for me. It makes me feel like they are always with me and support me.
My favorite hobbies and other interests
My favorite hobby is Taekwondo, which I have learned for two years. Learning Taekwondo is really a great experience, from which I learn to be a tough and strong person, not just physically, but mentally. It teaches me to be patient and never give up no matter what difficulties I encounter. Other than that, I also like music which is powerful to cure me when I am down. Reading is another hobby, which helps me relax and enrich my knowledge.
My proudest achievement so far in life: Winning the Hinrich Global Trade Leader Scholarship for Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University is my proudest achievement so far.
The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life is
Back when I was in middle school, I was a student whose grade always ranking almost the end of the class. At that time, I was in my rebellious period, so I always hanged out with friends and didn’t care about study, family, and my future. As I grew up and was more mature, I realized I couldn’t live my whole life like that, so I wanted to make a change. I started to study, really, really hard. I was left behind so far that I couldn’t catch up with my classmates. I really listened in classes, I asked my classmates, my teachers when there were questions I couldn’t solve. Those days were tough, in order to hang on, I even started running everyday, because I thought it would help shape my strong will. My effort worked anyway, I made progress in each exam, from the end of the class to the 40th, then 30th, finally the top. I made it, my life totally changed, everything changed, including me.
My future goals and aspirations
I wish to work in the sales or management field.
How I plan to give back and help others
I want to do more volunteer work to help others and share my experience with those who are also interested in my program.
As a Hinrich Foundation scholar, studying at Hong Kong Baptist University really widens my horizon. I meet different people, experience a different education system and take part in many activities that help train me different abilities. The life here is busy but wonderful, all the laughs and tears make my life more meaningful and beautiful. Things always happen out of my control, but I like the surprises from life. Whatever life gives you, it’s a gift, take it and you must learn from it.
