Report highlights handcrafted designs

Vietnam wicker furniture makers are highlighting the craftsmanship involved in the production of their models to differentiate themselves from competitors. Suppliers use both synthetic and natural materials in their products, including PE, rattan, bamboo and water hyacinth wicker.

A key advantage of furniture makers is having access to a pool of craftsmen whose skills have been passed down from previous generations.

Vietnam suppliers also have the advantage of having most raw materials available domestically. Natural rattan can be sourced from provinces in northeastern, north-central and central Vietnam. Bamboo is available from provinces in the northern, southern and central part of the country, while water hyacinth comes mainly from the Mekong Delta region in the south.

The report further shows:

– The country exported $69.3 million worth of furniture made of bamboo, rattan, cane, osier and similar materials in 2015, the most recent data available from the DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade database.

– The U.S. was the top overseas destination, accounting for 40 percent of total exports in 2015.

– At most Vietnam wicker furniture suppliers, OEM orders account for 70 to 80 percent of sales.
