My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship was

I feel honored and excited to receive the Hinrich scholarship. Despite fierce competition, I stood out and became one of the lucky ones to win the scholarship. All my efforts paid off and it was a worthy experience. I will make the best use of it to learn more and then contribute my efforts.

I’m interested in trade because

I have been interested in the business world for a long time, especially trade. I believe that sustainable trade is a good way to connect people and nations all over the world. People who are in need can benefit from it through international trade. Hopefully, what I learn can make a contribution to the trade industry.

What this scholarship opportunity means to me

It should be a significant turning point of my life if I make full use of it. The scholarship supports me to have a unique experience—study-work-study. It not only offers me financial support, but also provides opportunities to be exposed to the real work environment in advance.

The international experiences I’m most looking forward to include

I am really looking forward to participating in some summer exchange program in western countries to learn more different cultures and mindsets, which is very important to an international trade person. I want to seize the opportunity to have that kind of international experience.

What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home and why

I am a Cantonese and my home is not that far like some of the scholars. But I do miss my home like all the others. I bring with me a family photo and some handmade products, which will remind me of my sweet home.

My favorite hobbies and other interests I am passionate about are

Traveling and hiking can be two of my favorite hobbies. I love being exposed to different cultures and learning the essence in different environment. Hiking is a group activity which does good to our body, enhance the bond between people and gives me a sense of excitement.

My proudest achievement so far in life is

Winning this scholarship is one thing that I am really proud of. Thanks to Hinrich Foundation and my great efforts, I came closer to my dream.

The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life is

I had been a shy person and sometimes dared not speak out my thoughts. It had always been an impediment for me. I realized my shortcoming, so I decided to overcome it and I am on my way. I found various opportunities to express myself in front of people. I took part in the university speech contest and some other speaking contest to challenge myself. I conquered my fear and stood on the stage giving a speech with 400 audiences. The result turned out to be not bad and I won an award. So we need to have confidence in ourselves and try our best.

My future goals and aspirations include

Utilize what I learn in school to the real work—trade, bazaar, intern, Global Sources and so on. Use my knowledge to help those in need and influence more people.

I plan to give back and help others by

Dedicate myself in the upcoming tradeshow and bazaar and my precious intern job and future job. What is more, I hope to take part in more volunteer works to offer some help.

Story about Wanjing He (Sophie)

I am a girl who always has big dreams but dare not speak out because I think I lack of knowledge and there are a lot more people who have richer experience than me. So I think I should have more confidence in myself and express myself more to others.
