Rhetoric vs. Reality: The Shifting Dynamics of US-China Trade Relations
The event opened with introductory remarks by Otis Bilodeau, Senior Executive Editor of Bloomberg Asia-Pacific and Kathryn Dioth, Chief Executive Officer of Hinrich Foundation. Introductions were immediately followed by a presentation by Edward Alden, Senior Fellow from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Alden, author of the book “Failure to Adjust: How Americans Got Left Behind in the Global Economy” and co-author of the recent CFR discussion paper titled “A Winning Trade Policy for the United States”, shared his views on the factors behind the recent shift in US trade policy and what the future may hold for US-China trade relations.
Alden’s presentation was followed by a lively panel discussion moderated by Bloomberg News Asia Economic Correspondent, Enda Curran. The panel featured the following leading bankers, economics and experts:
- Edward Alden, Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)
- Stephen Olson, Research Fellow, Hinrich Foundation
- Alicia Garcia Herrero, Chief Economist for Asia Pacific at Natixis and Senior Research Fellow at Bruegel
- Dong Tao, Vice Chairman Greater China, Credit Suisse Private Banking Asia Pacific
Panelists analyzed the complex trading relationship between the United States and China and provided insight on how a potential trade war between the world’s two largest economies could ultimately impact the region. The panel discussion was followed by an audience question and answer session, where attendees asked hard-hitting questions about the current and future state of global trade relations.
