Hinrich Foundation Research Fellow Stephen Olson provided insights on the escalating trade tension between the US and China at a UBS Global Family Office Summit Asia 2019, held at Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong on May 9, 2019.

Stephen Olson on US-China trade war at UBS

The event commenced with the welcome address from Ravi Raju, Head Ultra High Net Worth APAC, UBS Global Wealth Management. It was followed by a keynote speech by Jun Ma, Director of Centre for Finance and Development, Tsinghua University. Ma spoke on China-US tensions and implications for China and global markets before making way for a panel discussion.

Olson took part in a panel discussion that focused on trade frictions around the world. The panel was moderated by Stewart Paterson, author of Hinrich Foundation supported book ‘China, Trade and Power’. The panelists included:

  • Stephen Olson, Research Fellow, Hinrich Foundation
  • Wei Shangjin, Professor of Finance and Economics, Columbia University; Former Chief Economist of Asian Development Bank
  • Jim Walker, Chief Economist, Aletheia Capital (HK) Ltd

During the panel discussion, Olson emphasized on the dynamics that are likely to move the negotiations between the US and China forward.

The day-long event concluded with closing remark from Sara Ferrari, Head Global Family Office, UBS Global Wealth Management.
