Report highlights wide range of indigenous materials used
Makers of fashion accessories and jewelry in the Philippines are using indigenous materials to differentiate their designs. Many are adopting pineapple-cotton blends and textiles made of abaca and other indigenous fibers in accessories such as clutches, totes, handbags and wallets. Beads made of seashells, natural wood or coconut are being used for embellishments.

“Most suppliers create their own designs. They can also develop models to buyers’ specifications or customize pieces for specific events,” said Cherrilyn Baylon, Hinrich Foundation’s Philippines export consultant. “To highlight Philippine talent for design, we have also released a special report titled Design capability Philippines.”

The special report offers insight on how the innately artistic, creative and resourceful Filipino designers build on their multicultural heritage to design pieces that are relevant to the modern consumer and lifestyle.
