Natural materials are a strong trend

Indonesia suppliers are offering buyers a wider option of furniture made of natural materials. Teak and rattan are the popular materials used by suppliers featured in the report.

Indonesia has about 91 million hectares of forest land, 56 million hectares of which are production forests. The country also accounts for 80 percent of the global supply of rattan. Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Maluku and the islands of Sumatra, Sulawesi and Java are the sources of rattan.

Several companies are also using other natural, sustainable materials such as bamboo to cater to the demand for environment-friendly products. Bamboo is a fast-growing woody perennial plant abundant in West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali and Yogyakarta.

“Teak, rattan and bamboo have long been used by Indonesia furniture makers to create traditional and modern furniture designs that showcase Indonesia craftsmanship,” said Emerela Puspita, export consultant of the Hinrich Foundation. “Furniture makers continue to use these materials today amid the growing demand for environment-friendly products.” said Emerela Puspita, export consultant for the Hinrich Foundation.

These materials enable suppliers to create pieces that highlight the design of the product as well as the texture and natural color of the material. Other companies are incorporating mute and bright colors such as lilac, mint, blue and orange to produce vintage or modern pieces.
