Report highlights handcrafted models made of natural materials
Skilled artisans and the domestic availability of bamboo, rattan and other natural materials enable Vietnam’s tableware industry to produce a wide range of handcrafted designs. Carvers, weavers and other artisans whose techniques have been passed down from previous generations can be found across the country.
Bamboo from the provinces of Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh, Son La, Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang is woven, coiled or pressed to create dinner plates, serving trays, placemats and table runners. Rattan, which is woven into serving trays and charger plates, is procured from Thanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Son La and Yen Bai provinces.
For designs, asymmetrical and novelty-shaped plates and trays are growing in number even as basic round, square and rectangular pieces remain widely available. Color options range from classic white to bright hues such as red and orange.
For greater variety in terms of look and texture, suppliers are combining different materials in a single design. Releases in line with this trend include water hyacinth bowls with rattan trims, and rattan trays with bamboo bases.
