Vietnam wicker furniture report highlights space-efficient designs

Latest releases feature space-saving features
Vietnam wicker furniture manufacturers are expanding their selections of space-saving designs. Recent releases are characterized by slim silhouettes, clean lines and minimal embellishments.
Multifunction models such as chairs and tables that can be serve as storage are also growing in number. Sectional sofas, which can be configured in various ways to fit different types of spaces, are among the latest designs as well.
“The trend is going toward space-efficient pieces. Aside from aesthetics, space considerations are becoming important to suit small houses and apartments to create more space,” said Ly Nguyen, export consultant of the Hinrich Foundation.
In terms of materials, natural rattan, bamboo and water hyacinth remain the popular options for indoor furniture. For outdoor pieces, synthetic rattan is commonly used.
Suppliers and products
Ho Chi Minh City-based Ba Nhat Rattan Bamboo Ceramic High-Grade Cooperative offers indoor and outdoor wicker furniture made of abaca or Manila hemp, water hyacinth and seagrass. Established in 1976, the company exports to Europe, North America, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.
Gia Man Co. Ltd, which was established in 2008, specializes in synthetic rattan furniture. The majority of the company’s output is sent abroad, primarily to Europe. Most of its products are meant for outdoor use, but the company also offers living room and dining room furniture.
Established in 2006, Hien Lluong Bamboo & Rattan Export Co., Ltd offers handmade furniture items made from bamboo, rattan, seagrass, palm leaves and other natural materials. Its main markets are Japan, Russia, Hungary and Romania.
The report further shows:
– Vietnam exported about $95.6 million worth of the seats and other furniture pieces made of bamboo, rattan, cane, osier and similar materials in 2016. This represents an increase of 38 percent from 2015, according to the DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade database.
– The US was the top single-country importer, accounting for 45 percent of 2016 overseas sales. The other main markets were Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and the UK.
– Interviewed suppliers intend to keep prices at current levels to attract orders.
