My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship

How deeply humbled and gratified I was to be chosen by Hinrich Foundation among many other strong and talented applicants. It is indeed a great opportunity to delve into the world of business and trade and meet people from diverse backgrounds.

Why I’m interested in trade

Growing up in a family where topics such as Singapore’s political history and US foreign policy created snippets of television-like drama at the dining table, it was no surprise that I inevitably became a political science geek and pursued a bachelor’s degree in political science. I became further intrigued by international institutions, international trade laws and their economic and socio-political impact on various regions and countries.

What this scholarship opportunity means to me

This scholarship opportunity will allow me to broaden my perspective on the interactions between business, international trade and technology. It is also exciting to be able to use this knowledge to empower firms in managing technology effectively, especially in a time when technology plays such an integral role in the success of one’s business.

The international experiences I’m most looking forward to

Though I’ll be studying my homeland, Singapore, NUS’ MBA cohort is “90-percent international,” which will definitely push me out of my comfort zone and allow me to meet people from a myriad of cultural and professional backgrounds. It will also be interesting to gain perspectives on my country through a fresh pair of eyes.

My favorite hobbies and other interests

Playing the classical or acoustic guitar. I usually take the chance to perform at parties, pubs and other social events. I also enjoy working creatively with musicians from other cultures and countries and using msuic to bring joy to others.

My proudest achievement so far in life

When at the age of 12, I conducted my first HTML course for my schoolmates and took up part-time video production assignments to earn additional pocket money and help my widowed father.

The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life

As a 24-year-old petite Asian lady, one of the largest obstacles I have overcome so far is the gender stereotyping of women in the e-commerce industry, a relatively male-dominated arena where women are often assumed to struggle with technical jargons and systems management. However, with hard work, time and supportive mentors, I was able to contribute meaningfully to discussions and execute projects effectively.

My future goals and aspirations

Developing Southeast Asia’s e-commerce market, a budding internet economy currently marred by inconsistent logistical systems, immature consumer behavior and lack of tech professionals. By developing Southeast Asia, it would not only promote trade within and beyond the region but also allow untapped talents to develop.

How I plan to give back and help others

Launching social and educational programs for troubled teens. I’ve always felt compelled to help out troubled and underprivileged teenagers financially and emotionally.

Personal statement

I am really excited and grateful to be a Hinrich Foundation scholar and getting the chance to pursue a master’s degree in business administration in one of Asia’s top business schools. I look forward to the challenging and rewarding journey ahead and hope that eventually, I’ll be able to contribute meaningfully to the world of business and trade!

Story about Genin Koh

My name is Genin Koh, and I am currently a graduate student at National University of Singapore pursuing an MBA.

Business, politics and technology have always piqued my interest, even at such a young and impressionable age.

My childhood memories involve accompanying my father to his office at Mediacorp Studios, one of the main TV broadcasting studios in Singapore. I was particularly intrigued as a child when he retold stories like leading a team to ensure the stage lighting and video effects for an interview with Singapore’s late founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, were executed flawlessly.

Later on, helping out in his home-based video-editing and film conversion business for clients of different cultural and international backgrounds exposed me to the fascinating world of business, trade and IT. This prompted me to get my feet wet by providing HTML courses and video production services in my teens to earn additional pocket money.

This great interest in business, trade and IT then compelled me to join Global Sources, a B2B e-commerce firm that connects suppliers in China to businesses around the world through online and offline platforms. In the past three years, I have had exciting opportunities to develop industry-based strategies for major markets including US and India, meet international buyers at our trade show in Hong Kong and propose recommendations on business strategies to management.

I hope that with a deeper knowledge of international business and corporate strategy, I will be able to help develop Southeast Asia’s e-commerce market and promote trade within and beyond the region.
