My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship
I thought, “It’s a miracle!” I will never forget the moment I received an email granting me a fully financed MBA scholarship from the Hinrich Foundation. I am so grateful to be given this lifelong experience of being a Hinrich scholar. I will never forget all the things the foundation has done for me.
Why I’m interested in trade
Global trade connects more people and goods from different parts of the world. They may have different languages, cultures, backgrounds, distinct habits and unique perspectives of life, but what they have in common is turning the world into better place through an exchange of the best products.
What this scholarship opportunity means to me
I remember a quote from an inspirational video, “Anyone can run downhill, not many people can run up.” This MBA scholarship will help me get to the next level of my career. It will open many doors for me, facilitate my growth and impact my vision. More than a sole financial benefit, the scholarship represents the academic and creative longevity of the Hinrich community. To me, that is the greatest honor.
The international experiences I’m most looking forward to
Taking up my MBA and the chance to work with TBS, one of biggest names in the industry.
TBS has been establishing for worldwide market and its vision for leading future trend. Their international oriented with the raising popularity brand awareness are the greatest advantages when it offers a way to advance my business knowledge. I also hope my experiences working for Western companies can assist TBS in increasing market share and filled with high quality expectations.
My favorite hobbies and other interests
Sports and watching football. I love cardio core training, specifically the Les Mills Body Combat workout. I train and do body combat at home for 60 minutes every day.
My proudest achievement so far in life
Joining Amscan and managing Party City. During that time, I led the biggest venture to move production from China to Vietnam by sourcing new suppliers and negotiating savings on hardline party products. I had success on hitting annual target with savings around 30 percent compared to China.
The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life
For me, it already happened. There’s nothing I can do to go back and change the past, so I have accepted it and see it as a gift. Everyone has made some mistakes. I try to look forward and avoid making the same mistake. I always try to simplify things when difficulties arise, but of course, I still feel sad when I let someone down because of my mistake.
My future goals and aspirations
I would like to strengthen my abilities and work with inspiring people to build my legacy. I have mostly worked for international companies, but I believe my experiences and skills will enable me to contribute to the success of local companies, particularly the TBS Group.
How I plan to give back and help others
Using what I learned from the program to contribute to the Hinrich community, and that not a single knowledge acquired will be wasted. I will put myself into others’ situation and support them by putting my heart in every single task.
What I am about to write will probably never be enough to express such infinite gratitude I feel. It is something I will carry for the rest of my life.
From the moment I first stepped into the Hinrich Foundation office, I was greeted and warmly welcomed by the managing staff from the foundation and TBS. Minutes later, conversations were started and friendships were being made. I was really excited for being chosen to receive this fully financed MBA scholarship. This moment of happiness happened on May, three months ago, but it still feels like yesterday. The new journey has just begun, and I am still in the process of writing my future.
Having recently worked has provided me the advantage of knowing how to negotiate and deal with vendors, how corporations target to transit product purchases to new vendors and develop their network within South East Asia. From those numerous occasions, I learned new skills, techniques and production knowledge to better understand products and challenges facing vendors. These skills and experiences, I hope, will help me in the journey ahead of me.
Story about Hieu Hoang
I can still picture driving myself in kindergarten, heading home in a bicycle with my mother, who picked me up from school. I can still remember the intense curiosity I had while seeing my father repairing something. Remembering these things have made me realize that I am truly their son – I inherited his sense of responsibility and her thirst for knowledge. It makes sense. After all, my mother is a teacher, while my father is an engineer.
When I was still in school, I always managed to get high scores. The turning point came when I underwent practical training while I was still taking my communication degree. I realized I was not really interested in my current degree and eventually decided to pursue another course, which took another three years to finish.
After graduation, I worked for a company with new procedures and products. Because the company was large and involved many segments, it was difficult to find an expertise. However, this enabled me to discover hidden abilities and adapt quickly in challenging situations.
After this, I joined Eurofar, where I had the chance to learn about production, costing, marketing and shipping, as well as how customer trends shape new trends. I later became a Hardline Manager for Amscan Asia, where I oversaw the entire process from beginning to end. Mistakes were made, but in the end, we managed to achieve our goal.
Right now, I have just started on my new journey, and while my future remains to be written, I would like it to be known to those who have helped me that I am thankful and that I wish them all the best in life.
