My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship
My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship:“When it rains, it pours,” I told myself. I’ve got the good news from Hinrich Foundation and Cardiff University almost at the same time. The double happiness , however, has soon become a tough choice between two roads. I rationally favoured the UK education for a long time ago, but this was the time for not only listen to my head but also to my heart. In late 2014, when I found information about Hinrich scholarship, I felt in “love at first sight” with this organization, not only for the scholarship itself but also for what people there were doing. The perfect combination between professional career and community activities as well as ideal work environment made me feel “this is my fate”. I spent some time to make up the final decision. Sometimes I was confused, sometimes I felt lost. Finally, my heart won, I chose my privilege to have Hinrich Scholarship, without any regret.
Why I’m interested in trade
When I was a student majored in Sociology, I was at the extreme side to criticize rapid economic growths which cause social issues such as inequality, social gap and environment degradation. But back then I cannot support my favourite theory which is sustainable development without trade factors. It is said that “World can run without money and currencies but not without business and trade.” Trade enhancement will not only benefit the economy of a country but it also improves people’s well-being, to generate long-term values and finally establish global peace. Although trade is a brand-new field to me, it’s so important to study and to promote it.
What this scholarship opportunity means to me
I wanted to become a professional journalist, but I have not had chance to do so. I wanted to find a job in an international non-profit organization, but I still have not had chance to do so. Since I got Hinrich Global Trade Leader Scholarship, I had all in one. It opened in front of me a whole new world in which I understand, think and act with a global thinking. Every lift needs a lever, with Hinrich Scholarship, I strongly believe I can be what I want to be.
The international experiences I’m most looking forward to
Living and working as a global citizen in a network of different perspectives but same ambitions, this is the experience I most expected. I am welcome shock cultures, cultural conflicts and cultural accumulation that I can explore other parts of the world. Finally, as a journalism student, I want to enjoy freedom of press in foreign countries.
What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home
Memories lay on our heart, not on physical objects, so I bring no thing. Another reason is that I always keep contact with every family members and friends via social networks that no one feels distance. But if I could bring something alive, I brought my dogs, as they cannot do Skype talks.
My favorite hobbies and other interests
Books are my best friends. I am reading whenever possible. I prefer fiction genres, which help me to free myself from stress and to develop my emotional life. I also love doing volunteer jobs. During the past six years, I always arrange my schedule to work some time for several NGOs, so even when I move to Hong Kong, I still try to keep that interest.
My proudest achievement so far in life
Year 2015 is a remarkable milestone when I both received scholarship from Hinrich Foundation and became the Cardiff University Scholarship Winner. This fruitful result did not come by luck but from my own unstoppable efforts during the past years in studying and at work. For the thoughtful and long-term consideration, however, I chose the Hinrich Foundation scholarship to pursue my MA in International Journalism Studies in Hong Kong.
The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life
Negative self-judgment and the fear of being imperfect are my biggest obstacles. They were my enemies for years. They had prevented me from what I wanted but not dared to do. I thought of myself as a “tiny potato” in the world full of talented people. I was always afraid that I would not good enough. Since then I tried to not making mistakes, I tried to be small and normal. But one day I made a breakthrough, I asked myself “Not good enough for what?” I am now doing many things I have never done before, some are good things, and others are crazy. But I take courage to cop with failures, learn to treasure myself and to enjoy my life.
My future goals and aspirations
My ambition is to become a social activist to promote sustainable trade and global peace. My future goals are, first, become a part of Hinrich Foundation and to help more local traders in my community to benefit from the online marketing program. In a larger context, I will bring the local, marginalized businesses to the flow of fair trade and connect them to the international buyers; Second, I want to travel around the world and work overseas for several years.
How I plan to give back and help others
By doing industry researches especially for small and medium businesses, I convey valuable information to inform and equip them with knowledge and understanding about market, for example, the new standards of goods and services in global market or new trade regulation. In addition, in working with media, I hope to bring local stories to a wider international readership, provide people with a well-rounded knowledge and multiple perspective in order to create open, free and fair dialogues among relevant beneficiaries to lead a more sustainable trade.
