My first thought when I learned I was awarded this scholarship

When I got the call and heard that only one person was selected, and it was me, I immediately called my mother to tell her the news. She told me, “After all these years, your dream is going to come true.”

I have always wanted to take my master’s degree and work for a multinational company abroad, so when those opportunities presented themselves, I was speechless and thrilled. Going through the process was really challenging, since I was up against many applicants. Deep down, however, I knew I just had to give my best and prayed I would get it.

Why I’m interested in trade

Trade plays a significant role in improving a country’s economic growth. Healthy trade practices between countries create jobs and improve economic conditions, and so in the future I want to be a trade leader to help boost my country’s economy and improve people’s lives.

What this scholarship opportunity means to me

This scholarship is the gateway to a destination where I can be a trade leader. It has opened doors and led me to a path where I can continuously improve my personal and professional life. For this opportunity, I am very grateful to Hinrich Foundation and Carrefour.

The international experiences I’m most looking forward to

I am excited to learn new technologies, build a professional network and have a multicultural experience. All these experiences will help me in the future.

What I’ll bring to my dorm to remind me of home

Having my mobile phone with me will remind me of home. I have photos of my family stored in my phone, which I also constantly use to stay in touch with them. My family is important to me, so seeing them will inspire me and keep me going while I’m in Hong Kong.

My favorite hobbies and other interests

I enjoy hiking and have recently discovered an interest in cooking. I am pursuing both interests by going on hiking with friends and cooking dishes for my classmates who want to try Bangladeshi food in Hong Kong.

My proudest achievement so far in life

The moment I was selected for the scholarship program of the Hinrich Foundation and Carrefour Global Sourcing is my proudest achievement.

The largest obstacle I’ve overcome so far in life

When I was working for MAS and was given the responsibility to lead and cultivate a lean manufacturing culture inside the organization.

As the leader of this project, I had a difficult time because I had to change people’s mindset, which was not easy because nobody likes change. I had to open my mind before I could change others’. I had to train and even visit manufacturing plants in Sri Lanka to understand best practices in lean manufacturing and implement those in our Bangladesh plant.

After coming back, I had to set up a new process to improve product quality and increase productivity. It was a challenge at first but collaborating with the team made it possible to achieve better productivity and quality and reduce extra manpower during quality checks.

My future goals and aspirations

My goal is to improve the productivity of Bangladesh’s apparel industry and quality by reducing manufacturing costs and upholding sustainable growth.

How I plan to give back and help others

Sharing my expertise by participating in knowledge sharing platforms such as seminars and conferences, where I can reach my targeted audience and bring change in Bangladesh’s apparel manufacturing sector.

Personal statement

Set a target in your mind, keep dreaming and then work on the gaps to reach that target. Believe in yourself and always keep the faith. When the time is right and you are ready, you will get there.

Saiful’s story

When I was a student, I was able to meet Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who won a Noble Peace Prize for the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. He studied at Chittagong Collegiate School, the same school I attended. After he won in 2006, he visited our school and shared his experience with us.

From that moment, I realized that I wanted to achieve what he had – helping others and improving the country’s economy. That’s why during the first years of college, I started working in the apparel sector. I worked in the factory as a team member to fully understand the processes from start to finish. Having academic knowledge was not enough to be successful in the apparel sector, so I wanted to learn through practical experiences.

I worked early to develop my skills and become competitive in my field. Over time, I had learned and grown by joining training sessions and taking on new roles at work. Then the life-changing opportunity I was training myself for finally came.

In 2018, Hinrich Foundation and Carrefour Global Sourcing offered me a scholarship that has not only enriched my manufacturing knowledge at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University but also exposed me to a multicultural society that has improved my professional and communication skills.
