Nicholas Mulder talks sanctions and strategic diplomacy

Published 06 February 2024

The Hinrich Foundation hosted Cornell University’s Nicholas Mulder, author of The Economic Weapon and one of the world’s authorities on trade sanctions, to a roundtable lunch on 30 January.

Participants discussed the latest turns in how trade sanctions are being applied in international asset seizures and the spillover effects on financial and trade-related businesses. They explored the increasing use of extra-judicial legal instruments to empower seizures and how properly calibrated sanctions can be used as a means to amplify pressure toward attaining geostrategic goals.

Dr. Mulder is Assistant Professor of European History and Milstein Faculty Fellow at Cornell, as well as a contributor to the Hinrich Foundation.
