Hinrich Award for Reporting on Trade Goes to AP Team

Paul Wiseman, Joe McDonald, Anne D’Innocenzio of The Associated Press have won the National Press Foundation’s inaugural Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade.

The reporters received the award at NPF’s annual journalism awards dinner on Thursday, Feb. 13. More details on the dinner, and other award winners, can be seen here.

The 2019 winners of the Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade are Joe McDonald, Paul Wiseman and Anne D’Innocenzio from the Associated Press.

NPF judges said: “The AP series offers a big-picture historical look at America’s trade history and the factors driving the trade disputes. The reporters cut through the political rhetoric and dug beneath the headlines to effectively explain the realities of trade on a granular level. The writing is colorful, lively and admirably clear.”

These are the three AP stories:
“In trade wars of 200 years ago, the pirates were Americans”
“Countertops and rubberbands: US pursues obscure trade cases”
“Facing Trump tariffs, some companies, move, change or wait”

Judges for this award were Rick Dunham, co-director of Global Business Journalism at Tsinghua University in Beijing; Elaine Kurtenbach, Asia business editor for The Associated Press; Sudeep Reddy, managing editor of Politico; and Jerry Seib, executive Washington editor of The Wall Street Journal.

The Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade was established this year to encourage exemplary journalism that advances the understanding of international trade. The award carries a $10,000 prize.

“It has become critically important that journalists provide deeper perspectives on trade issues and promote a more informed, productive public dialog. The winning AP entries were well researched and provided fresh perspectives on complex trade issues.” said Merle A. Hinrich, founder and chairman of the Hinrich Foundation, a nonprofit focused on advancing sustainable global trade.

The Hinrich Foundation supports original research and education programs that build understanding and leadership in global trade. It was founded in 2012 by Merle A. Hinrich, founder and former executive chairman of Global Sources.
